How to scan

One short video for each scan mode, plus one on avoiding doubled walls. Play it, or tap a step to jump straight to that moment. The same videos are in the app: on Home under Learn, and in the Guide on the scan screen. Something went wrong? The Help center has fixes for common problems — in the app too, under Settings › Help center.

Scan a space

For a room or a whole home as a 3D model with photographic texture. Start in a corner and walk one lap about 2 m from the walls. At each spot, sweep from the floor to the ceiling and step on only when that stretch is green. Stop where the last wall meets the first, then fill the floor and the ceiling from the middle and tap Done.

  1. Start in a corner, loop once, ~2 m from walls Turn on the lights. Start in a corner and walk around the room once, in one direction.
  2. Aim at the wall in front of you, tap Scan, hold still Aim at the nearest wall, tap Scan, and hold still for a second.
  3. Stop, sweep floor to ceiling, then step on At each spot, tilt down to the floor and up to the ceiling. Step on only when that stretch is fully green, with no gaps. One lap covers it all.
  4. Walk slowly, about 2 m from the walls In a small room, that means a loop near the middle.
  5. Orange = not captured. Sweep it right away Sweep over orange spots while you're still next to them, not at the end.
  6. Stop where the last wall meets the first Stop when you reach the wall you started on. Overlap by about one step, no more.
  7. Then fill the floor, then the ceiling Walk through the middle with the phone tilted down to fill the floor, then come back tilted up for the ceiling.

Scan an object

For a single object as a high-detail 3D model with its real dimensions. Put it on a table or the floor with room to walk all the way around it.

  1. Plain surface, soft light, room to walk around Place the object on a plain surface in soft, even light, with room to walk around it.
  2. Point at it, tap Scan, fit the box Point at it, tap Scan, and fit the box around it.
  3. Step 1: circle all the way around Walk slowly around it, a little above its height. The ring fills as you go.
  4. Step 1 of 3 done After each circle the app pauses and shows the next step.
  5. Step 2: circle again from higher Raise your phone and circle again, looking down at it.
  6. Step 2 of 3 done If it keeps its shape, the app asks you to turn it over.
  7. Step 3: turn it over, circle once more Turn it upside down, tap to find it again, then circle once more to capture the bottom.
  8. All steps done Check your scan, then tap Build model.
  9. Can't turn it over? Step 3 is a low circle For objects that change shape when turned over, step 3 circles at the object's level instead.

Scan a floor plan

For a dimensioned 2D drawing of a room, or several connected rooms in one walk. Only walls, openings and furniture matter here — not the floor or ceiling.

  1. Lights on, curtains open. Start in a corner, tap Scan Close doors to other rooms. Start in a corner and tap Scan.
  2. Walk along the walls, phone at chest height No need to scan the floor or ceiling.
  3. Pause at windows and doors until outlined Pause at each window and door until it's outlined.
  4. Show large furniture from the side Show large furniture from the side so it lands on the plan.
  5. Finish where you started, tap Done Finish where you started, then tap Done.

Avoid doubled walls

When a wall, a poster or writing shows up twice in a Space scan, the phone lost track of where it was. This video shows what causes it and how to scan so it doesn't happen. More in the Help center: Walls or text appear twice.

  1. Too fast, sharp turns, aiming at a window Walking fast, swinging the phone around, or pointing it at a big window or empty space makes it lose track of where it is.
  2. The same wall gets captured twice Everything scanned after that lands slightly off, so walls and pictures show up twice.
  3. Walk slowly, turn gently Move slowly and pivot gently instead of swinging the phone around.
  4. Keep part of the last view in frame Each view should still include part of what you've already scanned.
  5. Stop where the last wall meets the first Stop when you reach the wall you started on, overlapping by about one step.
